Kiev struck by missiles, drones in reported Russian attack

(MENAFN) Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces launched multiple waves of missile and drone attacks on Kiev overnight, though the Russian Defense Ministry has yet to respond. The initial strikes began shortly after midnight, prompting Mayor Vitaly Klitschko to urge residents to take shelter as the city’s air defenses engaged incoming threats.

Additional explosions occurred between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., with Timur Tkachenko, head of Kiev’s military administration, confirming a fire on the roof of a non-residential building. By 5 a.m., Ukrainian authorities reported at least one fatality and another person hospitalized due to fires sparked by falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones.

Several videos circulated on Ukrainian social media showing damage from the strikes, though precise details about the locations and targets remain unclear due to strict local censorship. Officials vaguely identified the damaged sites as a supermarket, a warehouse, and an abandoned cottage complex.

Damage was also reported near the Lukyanovskaya metro station, which lies opposite the Artem missile development and production facility. Moscow has not commented on the attacks, but it frequently carries out missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian military infrastructure, insisting civilians are not targeted and accusing Ukraine of placing air defenses in populated areas.

Meanwhile, Kiev has intensified long-range drone raids targeting Moscow, with Russian air defenses intercepting numerous UAVs daily. In retaliation, Russian forces launched strikes on Ukrainian drone and missile production facilities last Saturday.

The two countries held two rounds of peace talks in Istanbul this year, but negotiations stalled in June after Ukraine rejected Russian proposals and later declared the process “exhausted.” Ukrainian President Zelensky recently called for accelerating negotiations, proposing another round of talks in Istanbul, even as Kiev launched a fresh drone attack on Moscow shortly afterward.
